Directorate of Medical Education (DME)

The state of Kerala has achieved remarkable success in the healthcare sector, largely due to its robust Medical Education system. Kerala's healthcare indicators are on par with many developed countries, a testament to the quality and effectiveness of its medical education and healthcare infrastructure. The history of medical education in Kerala began with the establishment of the first Medical College in Trivandrum in 1951. This initiative laid the foundation for a series of medical institutions across the state.
Notable milestones include the Medical College, Calicut in 1957; Medical College, Kottayam in 1962; and TD Medical College, Alappuzha in 1963, which was initially private but later integrated into the government system. The Trichur Medical College followed in 1982, further strengthening the state's medical education system.
Dental education also saw significant advancements with the Dental College in Trivandrum starting in 1959, followed by institutions in Calicut in 1979 and Kottayam in 2001. Nursing colleges were established in various regions, including Trivandrum, Calicut, Kottayam, Alappuzha, and Thrissur, to meet the growing demand for healthcare professionals.
Kerala's Directorate of Medical Education (DME), established in 1983, has played a pivotal role in this success. The DME has been instrumental in developing a well-qualified health workforce, ensuring that medical institutions are well-equipped and fostering research and innovation in healthcare. Now there are 13 Medical Colleges, 6 Dental Colleges, 14 Nursing colleges 5 Pharmacy Colleges and 2 Paramedical institutions which spread across the state under the medical education departments. The DME focuses on three key aspects: Medical Education, Patient care, and Medical Research.
By promoting high standards in these areas, the DME ensures that Kerala's healthcare system remains robust and effective. The state's medical institutions are not only centres of learning but also premier referral centres providing state-of-the-art care to patients. Research and innovation are also significant components of the DME's mandate, encouraging continuous improvements in healthcare delivery. Public health education, through Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) activities, is another critical area, promoting healthy behaviours and educating the public about health issues. The success story of Kerala’s medical education system is a remarkable example of what can be achieved with dedicated efforts and a focus on excellence in healthcare and education.
This page provides a detailed directory of medical, dental, nursing, paramedical, and health-related institutions managed by the DME across the state.
