The academic education started in the year of 1889 with the advent of school of Ayurveda established by His Highness Sri Moolam Thirunal of erstwhile dynasty of Travancore and arrived at the culmination of a Directorate of Ayurveda medical education in the millennium year. It comprises. 1.7.ayurveda colleges, One Siddha college and one Unani college. Apart from the 1st level degree courses viz, BAMS, BSMS, and BUMS, in Ayurveda, siddha and unani systems of medicine, it conducts post graduate courses in all the 14 disciplines of Ayurveda. The paramedical courses in Ayurveda Nursing, Ayurveda Pharmacy and Ayurveda Therapy, and Yoga and Naturopathy are being conducted in all the three government, two government-aided and other private ayurveda medical colleges.
The Traditional Knowledge Innovation-Kerala(TKIK), is a unique unit of the directorate for the conservation, R&D and IPR protection of ancient medical knowledge of the state, mostly engraved in manuscripts of palm leaves. International Research Institute of Ayurveda (IRIA) is another research initiate of the department which will be made operational in a couple of months at Kannur.
