Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Pioneers Advanced Stroke Treatment Through Neurointervention

The Department of Neurology at Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, has made significant strides in neurointervention, an advanced and innovative method for treating stroke. The college's Neuro Cath Lab, the first of its kind in the country to function under a Neurology Department, has already completed 375 neurointervention procedures, including 320 diagnostic cerebral angiographies and 55 therapeutic interventions. Many of these treatments are rarely performed elsewhere in India. The department has successfully restored health and hope to numerous patients through these life-saving procedures.

Neurointervention services were launched in the medical college in June 2023, marking a new era in stroke management. Some of the most complex and rare cases, such as difficult aneurysms, have been treated successfully. The medical college has even conducted angioplasty on extremely thin brain vessels—procedures attempted only at a few centres across the country. Additionally, rare conditions like dural arteriovenous (AV) fistula, carotid cavernous fistula, and arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are being managed effectively through embolization.

These highly specialized treatments, which would typically cost lakhs of rupees in private facilities, are being provided either free of charge or at minimal cost through government schemes. Notably, mechanical thrombectomy, a time-critical procedure for stroke patients, has been performed successfully even on patients aged 90 and above.

Stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is disrupted due to thrombosis (clot) or hemorrhage (bleeding). The golden window for stroke treatment is within 4.5 hours from the onset of symptoms. Early symptoms may include numbness of the face, weakness in the arm or leg, and difficulty in speaking. Immediate medical attention is crucial, as timely treatment can save lives and prevent long-term disability.

To support emergency care, a Comprehensive Stroke Center has been established at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. This includes modern facilities such as CT Angiogram, a dedicated Stroke Cath Lab, a specialized Stroke ICU, and a 24/7 helpline. Patients showing symptoms of stroke can contact the helpline at 9946332963 to receive immediate assistance. A highly trained and responsive medical team is available round-the-clock to ensure urgent and effective care.
