State-of-the-art Molecular Diagnostic Lab now open at Life Sciences Park in Thonnakkal

An 80,000 square feet admin and biotech lab building has become operational at Life Sciences Park in Thonnackal, Thiruvananthapuram. The facility has advanced molecular diagnostic capabilities, capable of detecting around 80 viral diseases, including monkeypox. The Institute of Advanced Virology is working to establish 16 biosafety-level II category labs, out of which 8 labs have already been completed. The remaining 8 labs are expected to be completed by the end of the FY 2023-24. Once the project is fully operational, a total of 22 labs will be available for activities in the field of virology, including clinical virology, viral diagnostics, viral vaccines, antiviral drug research, virus applications, virus epidemiology, virus genomics, and basic and general research.
Construction of another wing with BSL 3 labs is set to begin at the Institute of Advanced Virology in the Life Science Park. These state-of-the-art labs will be equipped with modern facilities to test for COVID-19 and rabies. As a result, virology testing and research in the state will be made much easier.
