Ozhalapathy FHC becomes India's second Antibiotic Smart Hospital

The Ozhalapathy Family Health Center in Palakkad district has become the second Antibiotic Smart Hospital in the country, following the Kakkodi Family Health Center in Kozhikode district, which is the first Antibiotic Smart Hospital. These hospitals achieve this status by meeting 10 specific goals outlined in guidelines to prevent the overuse of antibiotics. The broader objective is to transform all hospitals into smart hospitals over time.

A significant global health concern is antimicrobial resistance, where disease-causing bacteria develop resistance, particularly to drugs. If the current trend persists, it is estimated that by 2050, one crore people could lose their lives due to antimicrobial resistance. The Department of Health is taking the lead in raising public awareness about the severe health risks associated with actions such as purchasing and consuming antibiotics without a doctor's prescription, improper antibiotic usage, and unnecessary prescribing and use of antibiotics.

Kerala has pioneered by establishing Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) committees at both district and block levels, aiming to make Kerala an 'antibiotic-literate' state. Various initiatives are underway in the state to implement the 'Antibiotic Literate Kerala' and 'Smart Hospital' programs. The state is actively working towards integrating all hospitals into the Kerala AMR surveillance network.
