Kerala has been nationally recognised for its outstanding tuberculosis (TB) prevention efforts. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare awarded the state for conducting the highest number of NAAT (Nucleic Acid Amplification Test) screenings under a 100-day program led by the Health Department, ensuring early detection and treatment of TB patients.

Between December 7, 2024, and March 7, 2025, a total of 87,330 people were tested in the TB prevention program. Of these, 71,238 underwent advanced molecular testing using CBNAT and TrueNAT, while 18% were tested using traditional microscopy. The state achieved an average NAAT testing rate of 82%, identifying 5,588 TB patients who were provided with follow-up treatment.

Kerala has been implementing various TB control initiatives, earning national awards in 2022 and 2023 for successfully coordinating efforts across both government and private sectors. In 2024, 138 local self-government bodies qualified for the Tuberculosis-Free Panchayat Award, with over half of the local bodies in Wayanad and Idukki achieving TB-free status.

As part of the 100-day action plan, an extensive awareness campaign increased the TB screening rate from 1,500 to 2,201 per lakh population per year. A total of 81.6 lakh high-risk individuals were mapped, and detailed examinations were conducted for 1,98,101 symptomatic individuals, leading to 5,588 confirmed TB cases with ensured treatment.

The award is a clear reflection of Kerala’s strong health initiatives and teamwork between the government and local bodies. With continued strides in TB prevention, Kerala remains at the forefront of India's goal to eliminate tuberculosis by 2025.
