Mobile Medical Unit

Despite being blessed with natural beauty, Idukki and Wayanad districts remain economically, socially, and educationally backward. The majority of the land area in these districts consists of hilly terrain. Due to this unique geographical feature and specific dietary habits, various diseases are prevalent among the population. However, the challenging topography makes it difficult for patients to access hospitals and receive timely medical treatment. Understanding this challenge, the Department of Homoeopathy initiated the Speciality Mobile Clinic project in these districts to provide healthcare services. The Speciality Mobile Clinic project was sanctioned in the financial year 2015-2016. Operations commenced in Idukki district on August 19, 2015, and in Wayanad district in November 2016. Various stakeholders, including healthcare workers, ASHA workers, SC/ST promoters, Anganwadi staff, school and college students, clubs, social workers, public representatives, and local self-government bodies, have collaborated to support the initiative.
Objectives
- Provide healthcare services in areas with limited hospital facilities.
- Connect remote and marginalized communities with medical facilities.
- Extend healthcare services to economically and socially backward areas.
- Conduct medical camps and awareness programs in tribal and scheduled caste areas. Provide home visits for bedridden patients and deliver necessary treatments.
- Implement disease prevention measures in outbreak-prone areas.
- Conduct preventive medicine distribution, awareness classes, and seminars.
- Diagnose lifestyle diseases through blood tests (blood sugar and cholesterol).
- Identify diseases at an early stage and connect patients to other departmental projects such as Seethalayam, Sadgamaya, Ayushman Bhava, Janani, Endocrine, Thyroid, Rheumatology, etc
Operational Methodology
The Speciality Mobile Clinic team consists of a medical officer, a nurse, and a pharmacist, supported by a driver for transportation. Services are provided five days a week, including medical camps, colony visits, and home care for bedridden patients. Healthcare services and awareness programs are conducted in difficult-to-reach areas, including Anganwadi centers, MGNREGA, workplaces, and plantation areas.
