Mission Stroke, Tackling Health Challenges and Improving Care for Stroke Patients

Kerala has launched the Mission Stroke Scheme, the first initiative of its kind in India, aimed at providing timely and effective treatment for stroke patients. This project is a collaboration between the Indian Academy of Neurology, the Kerala Association of Neurologists, and the Comprehensive Stroke Care Unit at the Sri Chithira Thirunal Institute, with oversight from the Department of Health.

The scheme's main goal is to ensure that stroke patients receive prompt treatment by reducing delays in diagnosis. Initially started in Pathanamthitta district, Mission Stroke will soon be expanded to all districts in Kerala. The program focuses on reducing stroke-related deaths, improving treatment outcomes, raising awareness about stroke symptoms, and ensuring specialized care for patients.

A significant part of the initiative includes a year-long training program for medical professionals. Over 350 doctors and healthcare staff have already been trained. Stroke centres are also operating in 12 districts, alongside medical colleges across the state. Mission Stroke aims to decrease stroke mortality and improve recovery rates, making it an important step in addressing stroke-related health issues. The scheme could also serve as a valuable example for other states in India to follow.
