Kerala Leads in First National AYUSH Sample Survey

Kerala has emerged as a top performer in the first-ever National AYUSH Sample Survey conducted across India. The survey, conducted by the National Statistics Office from July 2022 to June 2023, evaluated various aspects of the AYUSH health system, which includes Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Yoga, Naturopathy, Siddha, and Unani. Kerala stood out in multiple development indicators, marking significant achievements at the national level.

The survey examined the use of AYUSH therapies for disease prevention, treatment, post-natal care, care for pregnant women, home remedies, medicinal plants, and traditional AYUSH knowledge in both rural and urban areas across the country. Kerala's remarkable performance reflects the growing influence of the AYUSH sector in the state's public health system.

Kerala has established Ayurvedic and Homeopathy institutions in all local government bodies and set up around 700 AYUSH Health & Wellness Centres. These institutions meet national standards, further boosting the sector. During the COVID-19 pandemic, AYUSH treatments gained popularity for disease prevention, and the number of people seeking AYUSH therapies has surged due to better facilities and quality care. Additionally, the state's proactive efforts in raising awareness through various media platforms have contributed to this success.

Kerala has outpaced the national average in awareness and use of AYUSH treatments. The survey revealed that 99.3% of people in urban areas and 98.43% in rural areas are aware of AYUSH branches of health. About 98% of people in Kerala have a clear understanding of AYUSH treatments, and 52% of the population in both rural and urban areas rely on these therapies for health care. Ayurveda is particularly popular, with 38.64% of people in rural areas and 31.98% in urban areas opting for Ayurvedic treatments. Additionally, 99% of households correctly understand the use of medicinal plants for health.

The survey also pointed that the state government spends twice the national average on AYUSH treatments per capita, both in rural and urban areas. The survey reveals that eight out of ten households seeking AYUSH treatment are experiencing positive results, with four households continuing treatment due to the benefits they've received. This data highlights the effectiveness of AYUSH therapies and provides valuable insights that will support the growth and development of the AYUSH sector.
