Kakkodi Family Health Center becomes India's first antibiotic - smart hospital

The Kakkodi Family Health Center in Kozhikode district has achieved the distinction of being the first Antibiotic Smart Hospital in the country. Hospitals that successfully meet the criteria outlined in the guidelines, aimed at preventing the overuse of antibiotics, are designated as Antibiotic Smart Hospitals. The government is actively working towards the goal of transforming all hospitals into smart hospitals.

Antimicrobial resistance, especially in disease-causing bacteria, poses a significant global health threat. The Department of Health has formulated a comprehensive action plan to curb the excessive and unnecessary use of antibiotics. Kerala stands out as the first state in the country to establish Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) committees at both the district and block levels, aiming to realize the vision of an 'antibiotic literate Kerala.' The state is actively engaged in various initiatives to implement 'Antibiotic Literate Kerala' and 'Smart Hospital.' Ongoing efforts include the incorporation of all hospitals into the Kerala AMR surveillance network.
