
Foetal Medicine Unit

I. Foetal Medicine unit started in CDC since 2020. In this Imageology Department detailed antenatal scan including anomaly scans are being done. The major services offered are First trimester scan (11-14 weeks), Early Anomaly Scan - 16 weeks, Target Anomaly Scan (18 to 27 weeks), Target Anomaly scan with fetal ECHO, Growth scan with fetal Doppler.
We have started Amniocentesis on 25.03.2023, first of its kind in Government Sector. Amniocentesis and Chorionic Villous Biopsy have to be done for antenatal diagnosis of Rare Disease. A microscope with high resolution is needed for amniotic fluid analysis. CDC plans to procure the microscope in the financial year 2023-24, once the budget is sanctioned for the year.
II. SAT/GMCT, has been accredited the status of Centre of Excellence in Rare Diseases. As per the Minutes of the meeting held on 20.02.2023 (reference 2nd), COE, under the chairmanship of the Principal Secretary, CDC lab has been identified as the Genetic Centre for the same.
III. Phase II of Genetic and Metabolic Unit of CDC :
Standardizing and diagnosis based on FISH (Fluorescent Insitu Hybridization), the first of its kind in Government sector in Kerala was started. The introduction of this new testing facility will help in diagnosing new diseases and to rule out Aneuploidy conditions and Microdeletion syndromes prevailing among children and adolescents.
