Five new departments to ensure expert treatment in govt sector

The Department of Health has achieved a historic breakthrough in the health sector by establishing new departments aligned with the progress of medicine. The Department of Critical Care Medicine, Genetics Department, Geriatrics Department, Rheumatology Department, and Interventional Radiology Departments are being initiated for the first time in the government sector. Through this initiative, the state aims to ensure treatment under the supervision of experts in their respective fields, initiate PG courses, and cultivate more experts in these domains. These departments will commence by providing adequate infrastructure and creating new positions.

1.Critical Care Medicine: Individuals seek treatment in the intensive care unit when their illnesses worsen or accidents occur. To navigate such situations and guarantee a quality life through treatment, the role of the critical care department is indispensable. Recognizing the significance of every treatment administered to patients in the critical care ICU, the Critical Care Department will be launched at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College in the first phase to offer specialized training and develop skilled doctors.

2. Department of Genetics: In the context of advances in medicine, the Department of Genetics is essential to understand the genetic causes of many diseases and to ensure the correct diagnosis and treatment of numerous rare diseases. Expensive genetics labs, previously exclusive to the private sector, will now be made available in the government sector. In the first phase, the Department of Genetics will commence its operations at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College.

3. Department of Geriatrics: Kerala boasts the highest life expectancy among states. The Department of Geriatrics is established to ensure a quality life through the early detection of diseases in the elderly, along with treatment, care, and psychological support.

4. Department of Rheumatology: The Department of Rheumatology commences with the comprehensive treatment of all types of rheumatic diseases. The aim is to provide cutting-edge scientific treatment for rheumatic diseases and illnesses affecting the body's immunity.

5. Interventional Radiology: Interventional radiology is a cutting-edge science that evaluates and treats all organ systems. The field of interventional radiology can revolutionize the medical field by providing painless treatment for diseases affecting the blood vessels from head to toe without surgery.

For the first time in the government sector in the state, interventional radiology department is started in Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam and Kozhikode medical colleges. The DSA machine required for interventional radiology treatment has been installed in these medical colleges. This treatment, which costs lakhs in private hospitals, is provided free of cost. With the introduction of interventional radiology department in medical colleges, it will be possible to create more experts in this field and extend the treatment to more medical colleges.

Blood clots, brain tumors with poor blood flow, and tumors anywhere in the body can be detected. Preoperative embolization can prevent excessive bleeding during surgery, and chemotherapy is available for cancers affecting the liver, bile ducts, blood vessels, etc. Additionally, embolization procedures for accidental bleeding, blood in the stool, and blockages in dialysis fistulas for dialysis patients can be better treated. With interventional radiology becoming an independent department, it is now possible to directly admit patients and coordinate their treatment.
