Malabar Cancer Centre (M.C.C.) has introduced CAR T-Cell Therapy, a groundbreaking advancement in cancer treatment. MCC is now the second government institution in the country to offer this cutting-edge therapy. With this significant milestone at the Malabar Cancer Centre Postgraduate Institute of Oncology Science and Research, patients can now access world-class cancer care.

CAR T-Cell Therapy is an innovative approach that harnesses the power of the immune system to fight cancer. The process involves collecting T cells from the patient, genetically modifying them in a laboratory to become Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T cells, and reintroducing them into the body. These modified cells specifically target and destroy cancer cells with precision.

At MCC, five patients, aged 16, 19, and 20, have received CAR T-Cell Therapy. Of these, three have successfully completed their treatment. While this therapy typically costs around ₹50 lakh, MCC provides it for ₹30 lakh through the Patient Assistance Program, with additional support available through various government schemes.

CAR T-Cell Therapy offers several advantages over conventional treatments. Unlike chemotherapy or radiation, which can harm healthy cells, CAR T cells precisely attack cancer cells while sparing normal tissues. This therapy is particularly effective for unresectable leukemia. Additionally, CAR T-Cell Therapy is a one-time treatment, reducing the need for prolonged hospital stays and minimizing side effects, thereby enhancing the patient’s quality of life.

The launch of CAR T-Cell Therapy at MCC marks a major breakthrough in Kerala’s cancer treatment landscape. This initiative not only ensures high-quality, cost-effective care but also increases access through government support programs.
