Burns ICU; State -of -art system to treat burns

A new burns ICU has become operational at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital, which ensures specialised and emergency treatment for patients with burn injuries. The ICU has eight beds, ventilators, multi-para monitors for continuous observation of the patients, and Hepa Filters to protect the burn patients from acquiring infections.

The new ICU has been set up spending Rs 3.46 crore and it has been created by converting the old surgery ICU of the hospital under the leadership of surgery and plastic surgery departments. With the setting up of the specialised treatment room for burn patients, the infection rate can be brought down, and expert treatment can be provided for those who are coming with more than 15% of burns.

In addition to the burns ICU, a skin bank is also being set up as part of this. The procurement of the equipment for the skin bank has started and will soon be ready for functioning. The skin bank is being set up to store the skin collected from people after death and it can be transplanted on burn patients according to their needs.
