The Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (IMHANS) in Kozhikode has  achieved remarkable milestones in mental health care, education, and research,  establishing itself as a Centre of Excellence in mental health. Here are its key  achievements: 

1. National Recognition: IMHANS is one of 11 institutions earmarked by the  Government of India to be developed into Centers of Excellence in mental health,  reflecting its leadership in mental health services, training, and research. 

2. Child Development Services (CDS): Launched in 2007, CDS was the first  multidisciplinary center in north Kerala to provide comprehensive care for  children with neurodevelopmental disorders. It has since grown into a major child  mental health service hub in the public sector in the region. 

3. Postgraduate Education: IMHANS became a postgraduate teaching and  research center affiliated with the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS).  It introduced MPhil courses in clinical psychology, psychiatric social work, and  psychiatric nursing—the only of their kind in government sector in Kerala. In  addition to this, IMHANS is also a KUHS recognised phD center. 

4. Community Mental Health Programs: In 2007, IMHANS initiated NHM supported community mental health programs in four northern districts of Kerala.  By 2017, these programs were taken up by the health services department. Also  IMHANS launched a mobile outreach intervention program for children with  neurodevelopmental disorders in 2010. This initiative was later adopted by the  government and extended statewide as the ANUYATRA project. 

5. Research Excellence: The institute has established a state-of-the-art molecular  laboratory for advanced research in neuropsychiatric disorders, collaborating  with institutions like the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology. 

6. Public Awareness: IMHANS actively engages in public education campaigns to  reduce stigma and promote mental health literacy across Kerala.
